VERENA BRAKONIER is a working class child and has been working as a freelance dancer / choreographer since 2008. She completed her dance studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. Since then she has worked with Josephine Findeisen, Moritz Frischkorn, Trajal Harrell, Antje Pfundtner, Martin Nachbar, Sylvie Kretzschmar, the Schwabinggrad Ballet, Jonas Woltemate and performed at festivals such as “Tanz im August”, “Ruhrtriennale” and “Impuls Tanz”. She received the promotion of young talent from the city of Hamburg and showed two solo works in the K3 - Center for Choreography | Tanzplan Hamburg on Kampnagel. She was a “Dance Web” scholarship holder at the ImpulsTanz festival in Vienna and then resident at K3 for eight months. In 2018 she was part of “TreffenTotal”, a collaborative format for 25 artists, funded by the Elbkulturfonds. She is currently researching the subject of classism - the discrimination based on class origin and class affiliation - supported by grants from the Hamburg Cultural Authority, the Hamburg Cultural Foundation and Dis-Tanzen, as well as residencies at Pact Zollverein. (See blog for research: www.classmatters-immernoch.de) As part of her residency at the Fleetstreet Theater Hamburg in January / February 2021, the short film “HANDS” was made in collaboration with Greta Granderath and Jivan Frenster. The film is released in February 2022 via Diversity Arts Culture Berlin and has already been shown at various festivals and at Berlinische Galerie. In the monthly online meeting, “Anonymous workers' children”, she invites Working Class / Poor artists to exchange ideas. She is involved in cultural – political contexts in Hamburg and was a member of the Megafonchor (only women megaphone choir performing at demonstrations) led by Sylvie Kretzschmar. She supported the Schwabinggrad Ballet, an agitprop activist-artist collective together with the Group of Lampedusa Hamburg. In addition, she organizes the Probebühne im Gängeviertel e.V. with Hamburg artists (a rehearsal space, at a former occupied building in the city center). She has been an active member since 2011 and helps organize “Sunday salons” on current topics such as money, sleeping, and escape at irregular intervals.

Seitdem arbeitete sie u.a. mit Josephine Findeisen, Moritz Frischkorn, Trajal Harrell, Antje Pfundtner, Martin Nachbar, Sylvie Kretzschmar, dem Schwabinggrad Ballett, Jonas Woltemate und performte auf Festivals wie „Tanz im August“, „Ruhrtriennale“ und „Impuls Tanz“. Sie erhielt die Nachwuchsförderung der Stadt Hamburg und zeigte zwei Soloarbeiten im K3 – Zentrum für Choreographie|Tanzplan Hamburg auf Kampnagel. Sie war „Dance Web“ Stipendiatin beim Festival ImpulsTanz in Wien und danach für acht Monate K3-Residentin. 2018 war sie Teil von „TreffenTotal“, einem kollaborativen Format für 25 Künstler*innen, gefördert durch den Elbkulturfonds. Zur Zeit recherchiert sie zum Thema Klassismus – der Diskriminierung aufgrund von Klassenherkunft und Klassenzugehörigkeit – gefördert durch Stipendien der Kulturbehörde Hamburg, der Hamburgischen Kulturstiftung und Dis-Tanzen, #TakeCare und #TakeHeart sowie Residenzen bei Pact Zollverein.

Im Rahmen ihrer Residenz im Fleetstreet Theater Hamburg im Jan./Feb 2021 ist der Kurzfilm “HÄNDE” zusammen mit Greta Granderath und Jivan Frenster entstanden. Der Film wurde im Januar 2022 über Diversity Arts Culture Berlin veröffentlicht und wurde bereits auf diversen Festivals sowie u.a. in der Berlinischen Galerie gezeigt. In dem monatlichen Online Treffen, “Anonyme Arbeiter*innenkinder”, lädt sie Working Class/Poor Künstler*innen zum Austausch ein. Darüber hinaus organisiert sie mit Hamburger Künstler*innen die Probebühne im Gängeviertel e.V. Seit 2011 ist sie aktives Mitglied und mitorganisiert in unregelmäßigen Abständen „Sonntagssalons“ zu aktuellen Themen wie Geld, Schlafen, Flucht.
